It not only adds a smoky heat to dishes, but a deep umami savouriness too. It's a really lovely chili paste because it's not too spicy. It has a sweetness to it which balances out the spiciness, and is perfect used in marinades, sauces, soups, sandwiches, and an array of other recipes. Also known as Cheese Buldak, this has to be one of my favourite Gochujang Chicken recipes out there. Maangchi is a fantastic Korean cook sharing all her incredible Korean recipes with her audience. This "Fire Chicken" recipe is essentially chicken breast combined with Korean hot pepper flakes (gochugaru), gochujang, soy sauce, honey, garlic, and ginger. You fry it and then top it with mozzarella, place it in the oven, and serve it with rice or noodles. It's so delicious!

Is gochujang spicy?

Yes, but not too spicy. It is the perfect balance between spicy, sweet, and salty.

What can I substitute with gochujang?

With super-savoury, fermented flavours and complex chilli notes, gochujang has a very distinctive taste which can’t be matched in other chilli sauces. However, if you wanted to just imitate the heat element, I'd recommend using sriracha sauce and combining it with gochugaru flakes to get that smoky flavour.
